DAY ONE:
Around one hundred competitors turned up for second last Europa Cup event in Vigo, Spain. Although racing was scheduled to start at 1.00pm, the slow arrival of the local competitors, and then some difficulties setting up the course meant that the first start took place at 3.00pm. Wind was 14-16 knots with gusts up to 20-25 knots and swings of 30-35 degrees. The standard had a clean start, while the radials could only have a clean go after a general recall. The wind strengthened later to 24-25 knots with gusts up to 35-40 knots. At the end of the day the standard and radial fleet could complete only one race while the 4.7 fleet was sent ashore before any start. The leaders at the end of Day One in the radial fleet: Viktor Matyas (HUN), Alejandro Perez GarciaDuran (ESP), Miguel Pereira Gomez (POR), and in the standard fleet: TiagoMorais POR), Guillermo Flores Martin (ESP) and Afonso Leite (POR).
DAY TWO:
A wind of 12-14 knots, with gusts up to 16-18 knots and swings of 25-30 degrees and beautiful sunshine. Some of the competitors arrived for the weekend only, so the number of participants grew to 150. More than seven hours were spent on the water due to the occasional hesitation of the Race Committee, but finally three good races were run. The Leader Board now looks like this: Laser Standard: first place Tiago Moráis (POR), second place Lander Balcaen (BEL), third placeMiguel Noguer (ESP). Laser Radial: first place Alejandro Pérez (ESP), second place Ignasi López (ESP), third place Eduardo Marques (POR). And Laser 4.7: first place Toño Alcázar (ESP), second place Ida Voutmamen (FIN), third place Ana Niquel (ESP).

74 sailors from 9 countries participated in the inaugural Topark Laser Europa Cup regatta in Balatonfured. Beautiful weather and good sailing conditions invited many sailors onto the water on the training day, however this did not hold up for the first scheduled day of racing and the whole day was spent waiting for wind to materialise. But the 'Gulyas Party' in the evening made up for the lack of sailing on day one. Despite Saturday being cloudy with light rain, the race committee were able to hold three races for all fleets in the reasonable 8 to 10 knot breeze. A 'Pasta Party' was held in the evening. Sunday brought perfect sailing conditions, with a steady wind of 14 to 15 knots, gusting to 16 to 18 knots, and three further races for all fleets were held.
In the standard fleet three Hungarians shared the podium, Bakoczy first, Fazakas second and Kaiser third). In the Radial rig Jon Emmett (GBR) won first prize overall with Milivoj (MNE) second and Batho (HUN) third. First woman was Fanni Hegedus, again of Hungary. In the Laser 4.7 the top two overall were Vadnai (HUN) and Huszka (HUN) with Dusan Bogdanovic placing third.

Day 1:
After many successful years in Hoorn the Dutch Europa Cup regatta has moved to Scheveningen and this year it is part of the much larger Delta Lloyd North See Regatta. Unfortunately, the regatta site is not fully ready at this point in time to welcome so many sailors, as it is basically an active construction site. The competitors were therefore very much looking forward to getting on the water. Although the Laser Standard and the Laser 4.7 fleets managed to get started, a few minutes after the first Laser Radial start dense fog descended on the area making any racing impossible, so the Race Committe was forced to cancel all racing for the day. Fingers crossed that things are going to get better tomorrow.
Day 2:
A cloudy day expected the competitors at the regatta site, and all day the danger of fog seemed to be hovering over the race area. Fortunately, the race committee was able to run two races for all fleets, in a breeze of 10-12 knots, and a current of around 0.5-1 knot. A mix of swell and waves of around 1 meter and a “tide-against-wind” situation made conditions interesting for the competitors. While the Laser Standard and Laser 4.7 fleets run nice races, the first fleet of the split Laser Radials got into trouble as many of the competitors took the wrong loop, and several of those who took the correct one, rounded the wrong (Laser 4.7) mark meaning that only a handful sailors finished properly this race. The first drop from the results is therefore eagerly expected by many of them. Due to this confusion, at the time of writing this report late Saturday evening, no proper provisional results were yet available.
Day 3:
The day started with a beautiful sunshine, so all were looking forward some decent see breeze to come later on. The first surprise came at the visit of the race office when it turned out that the Race Committee decided last evening at 9.00pm to abandon the first
race of day 2 (actually the first race of the regatta), for all fleets, without too much explanation. As the wind was not coming as expected, writing a large number of protests kept the competitors busy.
The signal to go afloat came as a surprise as the wind was around 3-4 knots maximum. The Race Committee was again, unfortunately, not on the top of the game, as they decided to go ahead with the first race of the day. Given that there was also a current of around 1 knot, this made racing, well sort of interesting. Courses needed to be shortened for all fleets so that the race could be completed. Many of the competitors then decided to call the day off at that point, even though officially the competitors were kept more than an hour still afloat, expecting conditions to improve. When filing this report no results are available, as it is still unsure, pending on the protests, how many races have actually been completed.
Final Day:
The day started promising as the sun was shining and all expected some see breeze to develop. The Race Committee reinstated the abandoned races for the Laser Standard and the Laser 4.7 fleets and the group of Laser Radials which completed properly the course (this was actually race 1). So at the scheduled time of 11 o’clock the first Laser radial group of race 1 had to (re)run a race to
get a complete round robin. Unfortunately, the see breeze never materialized, there was no more than 3-4 knots of sustained wind. On the other have the tidal current increased steadily up to 1.5-2.0 knots. This meant that only a handful of competitors managed to get to the windward mark, those slightly behind never got a chance to round the mark. The course was duly shortened, and the first few managed to complete this race while the others got DNF. As no more racing was feasible, all fleets completed 3 races in the regatta. For the Laser Standards the podium was shared by three Dutch competitors: Bouwe Broekens, Jochem-Bart Haakman and Serge Kats. For the Laser Radials the top three were: Ben Koppelaar NED, Marit Bouwmeester NED and Jon Emmett, GBR. As far as the 4.7 go, at the time of compiling this report the final results were not yet available.

Day 1:
The Laser Europa Cup started on Lake Garda 15th April 2010, the Peler, the wind that blows on the lake in the early morning has been weak and it results in a very strong and irregular Ora, the wind that blows lunchtime. At 1 pm the racing committee decides to start the races, the three different classes have been divided, the Standard and the 4.7 in front of Riva del Garda and the Radial in front of Torbole. In the Standard, the Italian Uberto Crivelli Visconti chooses the right and gets first to the first buoy, unfortunately, the Croatian Ivan Taritas overcomes him and keeps the first position until the end of the race. Same result for the Croatian in the 2nd race, and he gets the first place provisional standings. Second the Italian Luca Nasini, thanks to a third and a second place.
In the Radial class Tatiana Drozdovskaya form Byelorussia ends the first day of racing with two wins and gets first together with the Dutch Ben Koppelaar that achieves the same results. Third another Dutch, Yuri Hummel and fourth the young Italian Giovanni Coccoluto. Amongst the Italian women Francesca Clapcich stands seventh. In the 4.7, the first place goes to Oz Adam from Israel, that wins on the Swiss Guillaume Rigot and the Polish Mateusz Skrabaszewski.
Day 2:
Second day of racing in Torbole for the Europa Cup, Laser Class. At 12 noon the 470 boats get on the water in light and shifty air. The race Committee waits for the Ora, the wind that blows on Lake Garda from south, to get steady in order to start the races.
At 1 pm the first two groups of the Standards and 4.7 begin their race. At the first buoy the Italian Marco Gallo is first, followed by another Italian, Luca Nassini, who is also second on the provisional standings. The second group of the Standard Class is once again led by Ivan Taritas, first at the first buoy and first on the provisional standings thanks to his two first places on the previous day. At the second upwind buoy Marco Gallo is still leading his group, but the wind drops completely and on the racing course there are only 2-3 knots from the initial 8-10, a situation that forces the race Committee to stop the fleet.
Same destiny for the Laser 4.7 whose race is suspended. In the meanwhile on the Laser Radial racing course, located in front of Torbole, the boats wait for the wind to come, after a general OCS, the Committee waits again and at 4 pm decides to cancel the race and send back all the boats.
Needed to be mentioned the very fair and honest decision taken by the Dutch athlete Ben Koppelaar that in the morning produces to the jury his decision to withdraw from the first race because of a mistake in the first upwind buoy made on the previous day. By dropping this result the Dutch, who was leading the provisional standing up to that moment, goes to the 95th position and the Italian Giovanni Coccoluto gains two places and finishes second on the standings behind the incredible Tatiana Drozdovskaya (1; 1).
Day 3:
Once again the so-called “wind factory” has been on strike, leaving the 475 athletes without wind for the second day in a row. The Europa Cup Laser Class gets at its third day with just one day sailing and two races.
Since early in the day the situation on the lake leaves a few hopes, the “Peler”, the wind that blows early in the morning in completely absent and the sky above Torbole is packed with clouds. The knots on the racing course are just three.
The participants waits for the Ora, the wind form south, to blow on the lake but what you see on the surface is just a late Peler or the result of the storms that are hitting the mountains around Torbole.
At 1 pm the Race Committee decides to call the three fleets on the water in the hope to race at least one race. But at 4 o’clock unfortunately the boats are sent back to shore amongst the disappointment of organizers and athletes. Tomorrow the start is ten 10 o’clock in the hope that Torbole and Lake Garda will not lose their reputation.
Final Day:
For the third consecutive day it seemed another day of no-sailing in Torbole, lake Garda, for the Europe Cup Laser Class. But at 2 pm the Ora, the wind from south, came in and the 475 participants at the event had the chance to race another regatta. In the first group of the Laser Standard the Italian Michele Regolo, leads his group for the entire race crossing first the finishing line in front of two other Italians Carlo de Paoli and Uberto Crivelli Visconti. In the other group Pasquale Vitualiano gets first at the first buoy, but the Polish Karol Porozynski reaches him during the downwind leg and overcomes him. The Polish keeps the lead until the end and crosses first followed by the Italian Giacomo Bottoli. The final standings are: Karol Porozynski first followed by the Croatian Ivan Taritas who finishes this race with a tenth place, third the Josh Junior from New Zealand.
In the Radial the Italian Giovanni Coccoluto makes an incredible race and finishes first the race and gets first in the final standings followed by the Byelorussian Tatiana Drozdovskaya, who finishes just tenth but first amongst women. Second place overall for the Polish Rafal Milczarczyk. Last but not least the 4.7 Laser with the win of Oz Adam from Israel, second and first amongst women the Finnish Ida Voutilainen and third the Croatian Jure Frozp.

Day 1:
The first day of racing for nearly 200 boats at Lake Lugano was scheduled for 1pm unfortunately no one told the wind, which finally arrived from the South at 3pm. However two races were sailed, in the difficult conditions.
In the Standard rigs Oleksander Isakov had the closest thing to a consistent day with 1,5 with the other race winner bring Christoph Bottoni who was 22nd in the first race but won the second. In the first race the right side paid but in the second it was left so perhaps this accounts for the high scores.
The Radials, which are the largest fleet the sailors found it even harder to be consistent with Mario Sesevic getting 1,24 (after a capsize) and Giovanni Coccoluto getting 24,1. The overall leader and the only person to have two results in the top ten is Alessandro Merega with 5,5.
Lastly the 4.7s saw even more extreme results with Viboux 1, 32 and Pescini 32,1 well behind overnight leader Virag Zsofia who had 3,5.
With light southerly winds forecast again for tomorrow (Saturday) it looks like being a high scoring regatta.
Day 2:
The second days racing at Lugano was once again a long one, with the Southerly wind not settling until three PM. However the race officer’s team are hoping for an earlier start tomorrow.
In the Standard rig Christoph Bottoni who has been suffering with a bad back this winter scored a good day with a 6,1 to move him into the overall lead at the halfway stage. Race three was won by fellow Swiss Christian Steiger. At this stage Yan Chekh is the only sailor to have scored in the top ten in every race so the competition is still wide open.
In the Radials Tatina Drozdovskaya scored a 2,3 to move her into the lead by a single point from Mario Sesevic. However she is currently dropping a 13 compared to Sesevic 24th. Yesterdays overnight leader Alessandro Merega drops to fifth now the first discard has kicked in. The race winners today where both from Italy with Giovanni Coccoluto taking the first race of the day and Mario Benini the second.
In the 4.7s Noora Koskiahde has been able to discard an early OCS to lead the series, scoring a 2,3 today. The race winners once again had a inconsistent day with Ida Voutilaienen winning the first race of the day and following it with a 32nd. Tora Sebahattin Kutoglu took the final race of the day.
The forcast for the third day of racing looks like light Southerly winds again.
Day 3:
Unfortunately on day three of the Lugano Europa cup the Southerly wind never arrived. However just as the Race Officer raised the flags for postponed to another day a strong northerly wind arrived, but is already to late, with the flags flying no further races could be held. With the cut off time for the last race it looks unlikely more than one race shall be sailed on the final day.
Day 4:
The Race officer brought the start time forward to nine o’clock to ensure both of the races on the last day were completed. It was infact a great shame that no more than two races could be sailed in the good conditions. The wind was once again from the south but this time it was moderate in strength and increased throughout the day, which brought some new faces to the front of the fleet.
Christoph Bottoni went into the final day with a two point lead but a 1,2 saw him stretch that lead to12 points. Dany Stanisic won the second race of the day and took second overall with Christian Steiger moving up to third place overall after a constant day.
In the Radials the final day belong to with a Juraj Divjakinjal with a 2,1 pulling him up to third place overall. Jon Emmett also had a good day with 1,4 to take second overall but Tatiana Drozdovskaya was a well deserved winter only counting results in the top.5.
In the 4.7s Noora Koskiahde continued his constant run with a 3,2 to extend his lead. The race winners on the final day were Ida Voutilainen, Guillaume Rigot who finished 15th and 20th overall. Second overall was Mehmet Turkmen pushing fellow Turk Cern Derniz Namel into third overall.

Reports:
Day 1:
Despite the earlier than usual date for the first Europa Cup regatta of the year, a very large, record breaking, number of competitors showed up at registration: 138 L4.7, 278 radial and 100 standard sailors paid the 75 Euros registration fee. It looks like having three Europa Cup events in a row around the Easter school break period is paying off in participation numbers.
The weather forecast does not come as a surprise to anyone as strong winds are expected during the four days of the event in Hyeres.
As planned, two races were held the first racing day. 16-18 knots of steady wind nice sunshine provided perfect sailing conditions. The wind held up for the radials, while at the course of the L4.7 and standards the wind weakened to 10-12 knots for the second race.
For the standards the first two races were completely dominated by the Swedish sailors appropriating all podium places and beyond: Jesper Stalheim, Emil Cerdergardh, David Jansson and Victor Vasternas are sharing the lead. For the radials and the L4.7 the overall results were not available at the time of filing this report during the evening of racing day 1.
Day 2 & 3
During the second racing day in Hyeres a breeze of 10-14 knots expected the competitors increasing later to 15-16 knots. Again ideal sailing conditions so two races were run for all fleets.
The third racing day the first races were held in winds of 20-22 knots increasing later to 24-25. The Race committee feared further increase so the L4.7 fleet was sent ashore after the first race while a second race was run for the radials and the standards. In fact just the opposite happened: the breeze weakened to 10-12 knots with major shifts making sailing conditions trickier. By the end of the third day 5 race were run for the L4.7 and 6 for the others.
For the standards the podium is owned by the Swedish sailors: Jesper Stalheim, Emil Cerdergardh, and Rasmus Myrgren are sharing the lead. The Swedish sailing team chose not to go to the World Cup event in Palma instead they showed up in force in Hyeres.
For the radials the podium is shared between: Marci Rudawski POL, Louis Moysan FRA and Mattis Naud FRA.
For the L4.7 the leader board is: Leo Vilboux FRA, Guillome Rigot SUI and Hugo Fedrigucci FRA, but much can still happen the last day.
Final Day:
For the last day of the Hyeres Europa Cup Regatta all weather-forecast sites were predicting strong winds, and so happened to be. The base wind speed was around 20-24 knots, but at times this increased to 25-26 knots, so only one race was run for all fleets.
For the standards the podium has been monopolized by Swedish sailors: Jesper Stalheim, Emil Cerdergardh, and David Jonsson shared the prizes. For the radials the podium was shared between: Marci Rudawski POL, Louis Moysan FRA and Mattis Naud FRA.
For the L4.7 the leader board was: Leo Vilboux FRA, Guillome Rigot SUI and Jean Baptiste Guillou FRA.
Overall, the event was characterized by the record number of participants, the excellent on-water race management, and good and fair sailing most of the time.
It looks like, at this stage, that in 2011 the French Europa Cup regatta will move to La Rochelle, but will come back in 2012 to Hyeres. Perhaps by that time the event IT services (on line registration, informative and up-to-date web site, including results for each age categories, etc.) could be improved to make participants more satisfied, and friends and relatives better informed. Also, maybe the number (and quality) of the prizes given to the victors could be adjusted to better reflect the large fleet sizes (and more in line with the ILCA recommendations).
