Youth Ranking Ladder

From April 2010, the European Laser Class will be running a Youth Ranking Ladder. This is exclusive to European sailors and will be made up of World & European Laser championships, Europa Cup and national regattas.

What's in it for me?

As a European Laser sailor, the Ladder is a great way of showing your talent and measuring your success in the Laser in comparison to other European Laser sailors.
The three sailors which top the Ladder in each age and rig category on 1st January of each year will be awarded ILCA cubes. The cubes will be presented at the prize giving ceremony at the first Europa Cup event of the year.
Being included in the European Youth Ranking Ladder could also help you to get funding from your national sports body.

How do I get on the Ladder?

The European Laser Class has published a list of regattas that will be included in the Youth Ranking Ladder. Depending on your result at these regattas, you may be included in the Ladder. For example, for World Championships, the top 90% of sailors will be included in the Ladder, for European Championships the top 70% of sailors, for Europa Cup regattas the top 50% sailors, and for national regattas the top 30% of sailors will be included in the Ladder.

Your 7 best results over the last 2 years will be included in the calculation of your score (starting from 1st April 2010).

You should also check with the Laser class in your country to determine whether you have to attend the national regattas to be included in the Ladder. In some countries, attending the national regattas is compulsory, in others it is optional, so make sure you check.

Which age categories are there?

Laser Standard Laser Radial Laser 4.7

Youth Women Under 19 Youth Boys Under 18
Youth Men Under 19 Youth Girls Under 16

What type of events will be included in the Youth Ranking Ladder?

There will be 5 categories:

=> top 70% of sailors get scored (sailor 1 to 196)
  Regatta Points (R):
Sailor in 45th Position: R=56
  Event Grading Multiplier (F):
Event Category 1: F=3
  Quality Factor (Q):
Event Cateogry 1: Q=1.4
  Year Weighing Factor (YWF):
2010 is in current calendar year: YWF=1.5
R = 56 x 3 x 1.4 x 1.5
Answer: R = 352.8

None of the national regattas from my country are in the list? Why?

If there are no national Laser events from your country listed in category 4, then it is very likely that your national Laser class did not submit any events to the ladder. Please speak with your national Laser class. National events to be included in the ladder must be sent to the ILCA office by 31st October the previous year. So for 2011, your Laser class needs to submit its national Laser events by 31st October 2010.
