2019 Laser Radial Men’s and Women’s World Championships Begin

The 2019 Laser Radial Women’s & Men’s World Championships opened today in Sakaiminato City, JAPAN. These events follow the Laser Standard Men’s World Championships, which concluded last week. The Women’s event has 111 entries from 49 countries and the Men’s event has 33 entries from 5 countries. Complete entry lists can be found here.

Competition will be especially fierce in the Women’s event – the sailors are training for the 2020 Olympic Games, to be held in Japan, and countries are still battling to qualify for berths in those games.

Registration, charter boat allocation, and equipment inspection were the focus on this first day, although many sailors took advantage of clear skies and steady breeze to practice on Miho Bay. Also, more than forty sailors, coaches, and officials made time, midday, for a beach cleanup effort organized by the Japan Sailing Federation.

Registration and equipment inspection continue tomorrow, with a practice race in the afternoon (1400h) followed by opening ceremonies in the evening (1900h). Racing begins on Friday 19/July and continues through Wed 24/July. Follow the racing here on the ILCA webpage and on the event website.
