Two more races were completed today at the European Olympic qualifiers in Vilamoura, Portugal. In the women’s fleet, Israel’s Shay Kakon and Portuguese Carolina João are the top contenders for the two ILCA 6 slots for Tokyo, and Spanish Joel Rodriguez Perez and Belgian William De Smet are the top two contenders in the ILCA 7.
After a day of unstable wind, Croatia’s Filip Jurišić climbed into first overall with consistent top-five finishes. Great Britain’s Michael Beckett and Russian Maxim Nikolaev sit just three points behind Jurišić. In the women’s fleet Olympic medalist Anne-Marie Rindom of Denmark has held her lead after winning three of the four races. Switzerland’s Maud Jayet also had a day of top-five finishes after winning one of today’s races, which has moved her into second place overall, just two points ahead of French Marie Barrue. This qualifier event is held for European countries to claim their remaining four slots for the Tokyo Olympic Games: two in the women’s ILCA 6 fleet and two in the men’s ILCA 7 fleet. There are eight countries competing for the two ILCA 6 Olympic tickets, and 17 countries vying for the two ILCA 7 slots.
